AIL 604 spoke directly to my professional identity. I came into the program with prior experience as an instructional designer for a business school, where my work often meant uploading materials to a learning management system. This course transformed that practical-but-shallow experience into a critical, standards-driven understanding of how to design, evaluate, and improve online learning, advancing both my degree goal of becoming a rigorous designer-researcher and my professional aspiration to support higher-education institutions in delivering quality distance education.
What made the course so effective was its deliberate progression: each module built on the last, moving from introductory discussion posts, to evaluating an existing online course, to designing a complete course of my own. The evaluation assignment was a turning point. Using a structured critique rubric, I reviewed an open online course on learning outcomes and was genuinely surprised by how much was missing. The course leaned almost entirely on text and visuals, with no audio or alternative formats, and offered no instructor presence or clear learner support. Discovering how easily inclusivity is overlooked, even in a polished-looking course, gave me a new and lasting lens. Accessibility stopped being an abstract principle and became a concrete checklist I now apply automatically (CAST, 2018).
The capstone, designing a full online course in Canvas in Module 7, was the most challenging and rewarding work. It forced me to think holistically about alignment between objectives and assessments, navigation, and the overall learner experience, rather than simply assembling content. Along the way I built engaging materials with tools such as Animaker and Synthesia, and creating my first complete e-learning sample in Canvas markedly increased my confidence as an online course developer. A real constraint was access to subscription-based platforms like Blackboard and Canvas, which limited some exploration; navigating that limitation taught me to be resourceful and to rely on peers’ discussion-board insights, an authentic preview of how online educators learn from professional communities.
The peer-review process reinforced the value of external feedback: my course was reviewed by Timothy Okuneye, a colleague in an instructional design program at another institution, whose critique prompted concrete revisions. I added a prerequisites section, assignment rubrics, and clear due dates, components whose absence I had not noticed myself. Responding to that feedback taught me that good online design is iterative and benefits from outside eyes. I left AIL 604 with a portfolio-ready Canvas course, a practical command of contemporary authoring tools, and an internalized commitment to accessibility and learner support that now anchors my professional practice.
