AIL 605, Interactive Multimedia, gave me the cognitive-science foundation behind effective digital learning design, and it aligns closely with my research interest in immersive technology. The course’s central lesson, that the human mind’s architecture must drive multimedia design, reframed how I evaluate every learning resource I now create. It advanced my degree goal of grounding design decisions in theory and my professional goal of producing media that genuinely supports cognition rather than merely decorating content.

Engaging with cognitive load theory and Mayer’s principles of multimedia learning was foundational. I learned why presenting information in coordinated words and pictures, and chunking it to respect the limits of working memory, produces better outcomes than dense, single-channel delivery (Mayer, 2009; Sweller et al., 2011). The podcast assignment made this real: hosting Episode 001 of my “Interactive Multimedia Podcast” on cognitive load theory, in conversation with a guest, required me to translate a technical theory into clear, engaging audio for a non-specialist audience. That experience strengthened a skill I will rely on throughout my career, communicating complex instructional-technology concepts to diverse stakeholders.

The mind-map assignment on interactivity was equally formative. Synthesizing eleven major themes from seven assigned texts, I had to organize a sprawling literature into a coherent visual structure. The key conceptual breakthrough was distinguishing the technological view of interactivity (defined by media, input devices, and features) from the functional view (defined by the affordances that engage learners in meaningful action; Sims, 1997). That distinction now governs my design thinking: I no longer equate adding interactive features with promoting learning, and instead ask whether a feature provokes genuine cognitive and behavioral engagement. This directly informs my research focus on how immersive virtual reality and interactivity can develop skills in both the cognitive and psychomotor domains.

Taken together, AIL 605 equipped me with both the theoretical grounding and the practical frameworks to design, implement, and research interactive multimedia. It ensures that my technology choices serve evidence-based pedagogical goals rather than novelty, a principle that has become central to my professional identity as a designer and researcher of immersive learning experiences.
